Relationship Counselling
Relationship counselling is individual therapy: you come on your own, and we focus on your relationships – with a partner, a future partner, or the relationship patterns you keep meeting.
You do not need your partner in the room to create change. When one person starts to understand their needs, communicates more clearly and reacts differently in difficult moments, the whole relationship often begins to move. Together we explore what you bring into your relationships, what you long for, and what gets in the way.
Know-how from the Gottman Method
The Gottman Method, developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, is the approach I use in couples counselling (I have completed Level 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy). Many of its insights are just as helpful when you work on your own. In our sessions, we may use:
-
Healthier conflict
Recognise the four patterns that harm relationships most – criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling – and learn what to do instead. -
Turning towards
Notice the small everyday "bids" for connection – yours and your partner's – and learn to respond in ways that build closeness. -
Repair and calming down
Find ways to calm yourself when emotions run high, and to reconnect after an argument. -
Solvable or lasting issues
Understand which problems can be solved and which are ongoing differences you can learn to talk about with less pain. -
Your needs and dreams
Get clear on your values, needs and life dreams – and how to share them openly with a partner. -
Trust and boundaries
Build trust in yourself and others, set healthy boundaries, and choose relationships that are good for you.
My Approach
Alongside the Gottman know-how, I work with mindfulness, focusing on bodily feelings and other methods described on the Individual Therapy page. Relationships touch us deeply, so we do not only talk – we also pay attention to what you feel, so that new ways of relating can become natural for you.
Having lived abroad myself, I also understand the extra layer that culture, language and distance from family can bring into relationships.
